- TRAINING CLASSES
- REACTIVE DOGS
- BEHAVIOR CONSULTS
- The exercises presented in this
seminar are based on the Control Unleashed® program developed by Leslie McDevitt. Control Unleashed®
is a 7-week course developed by Leslie McDevitt and is presented in her book of the same title.
For more information on Control Unleashed® training, see www.controlunleashed.net
- The Go For It! R&R seminar is rather different from other seminars that you are probably used to
hosting. The dogs who are working dogs for the seminar must be appropriate for the work. They may
not be out and out reactive or aggressive dogs.
- Some mild issues with other dogs might be acceptable
depending on the description of the circumstances and the behaviors.
-
Click here for criteria for working teams in the seminar.
- The seminar setting requires a fair amount of space so that the working dogs can be
comfortable and not stressed by the nearness of things that cause them concern; these
things could be dogs, people, motion and so on. A lot will depend on the number of auditors
you accept and the number of working teams.
- We structure the seminar such that it is a model of a Control Unleashed class albeit
it a bit larger than a class would be. You will get to see the progression of dogs going
through the various elements of the exercises as far as they can go. Some will not be able
to go as far as others. We absolutely will not stress dogs by asking too much of them!! After all,
that's a fundamental principle of Control Unleashed® - learning to read what's too much
and what's just right.
- This type of seminar is observationally intense to the point of learning to read very
minute behavioral signals, it can be labor intense. Because we are gearing it towards not
only demonstrating all the elements of the Control Unleashed® program that we use in
our classes but also demonstrating how to setup a class or practice group, we only do
this seminar as a team of two presenters.
- The seminar structure is this:
- Large indoor training space - at least 4500 sq ft. or larger. This is a doable space for 8
working teams and 20 auditors. The space should be at least 60 ft in the smaller dimension.
- Audience organized into a horseshoe configuration.
- Working teams will each have a station (dog show mat, crate, chair, mat for dog to be on).
Having a dog show type mat will help define the station space. Auditors will be set up in
chairs in between each working team's station.
- In the center of the horseshoe will be The Box. This is a ring-gated area about 20 ft x 20 ft
where each dog will do individual work in a "sacred space" where he is able to focus. The Box
will be there for some activities and not for others. In its place will be a Parallel Games
setup or some other game setup.
- Instructional information will be via PowerPoint slides and video clips that can be seen
from all chairs. Each activity will be described and then demonstrated using the working
teams at their stations. This will give the working dogs plenty of down time during the
talking portions of the seminar. Any windows in the room must be covered so that the
video may be properly viewed.
- Control Unleashed® classes are like a seminar in that each dog is working an individual
program and much of what each dog needs is individually configured. The same is true
of the GO FOR IT! Relaxed and Ready seminar. It is very
exhausting work but OH SO rewarding!
- The length of the seminar day may not be a full day. It depends on the brains full/eyes glazed
over/dogs have had enough factor. Our intent is to leave you with enough information and hands-on
experience that people could, not only learn how to work with their own dog, but also
set up a mutual support/training get-togethers or that a behaviorally-oriented trainer could
set up a class successfully. Helix and Megan have spent a good bit of time working out a
lot of kinks to teaching classes and we would like to help others get started off well.
