- AVSAB POSITION PAPER ON PUPPY SOCIALIZATION
- This is an extremely important stand for behavioral veterinarians to take. Your Dog’s Personal Trainer
is thrilled at their support for early socialization of puppies.
- The importance of:
- socialization to the world starting at 7 weeks of age,
- positive reinforcement training,
- foregoing methods that involve punishment and/or that encourage human dominance,
- early crate and other confinement training for safety and comfort, and
- having alone play and rest time
- cannot be over-stated as to reducing the risk of behavioral problems in your new dog.
THE FIRST FOUR MONTHS ARE CRUCIAL. Make them count towards the life you want for your
dog and your family.

AVSAB POSITION PAPER ON THE USE OF DOMINANCE THEORY IN BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION OF ANIMALS
- The AVSAB emphasizes that the standard of care for veterinarians specializing in behavior is that
dominance theory should not be used as a general guide for behavior modification. Instead, the AVSAB
emphasizes that behavior modification and training should focus on reinforcing desirable behaviors,
avoiding the reinforcement of undesirable behaviors, and striving to address the underlying emotional
state and motivations, including medical and genetic factors, that are driving the undesirable behavior.
- The AVSAB emphasizes that the use of scientifically sound learning principles that apply to all species
is the accepted means of training and modifying behavior in pets and is the key to our understanding of how
pets learn and how to communicate with our pets.
Your Dog’s Personal Trainer supports and uses only documented scientific principles for behavior
modification and training of companion and performance dogs.
- A COLLECTION OF LINKS REGARDING CANINE HYPOTHYROIDISM & BEHAVIOR
- If you observe behavior changes in your dog, please talk to your veterinarian regarding a full
thyroid panel evaluated by an endocrinology lab. Your Dog’s Personal Trainer
recommends bloodwork for thyroid panels be sent to Hemopet (Jean Dodds, DVM) for interpretation.
Be sure to include a complete description of all behavioral changes and symptoms plus a complete description
of re-occurring physical symptoms of any kind.

Collection of Links on Canine Hypothyroidism
There is now an OFA registry for certifying breeding stock regarding hypothyroidism.
It’s that important. Do your homework before talking with your veterinarian. Be prepared to support
your request for a full thyroid panel sent to an endocrinology lab with articles by veterinarians.
