- STEP 1:
Set up your boundary.
Warm-up with several
repetitions (as in Level 3).
- STEP 2:
As your dog is crossing over the line to his position,
cue "line up". Click the sit, toss the treat behind the
dog. Repeat several times. Release the dog from
behind the line for a break.
- STEP 3:
Once your dog is responding reliably to the cue,
increase your distance from the line gradually until
you can be at your front door and cue your dog to
"line up" at a line 8 feet from the door.
- GOAL:
- The purpose of this exercise is to add the cue to
tell your dog to line-up behind a boundary. A good
place to start this is at a door, a threshold, edge
of the driveway, a step or at a rope or leash on the
ground. Practice in small increments and use a leash
for safety if necessary.
- USES FOR THIS BEHAVIOR:
- Waiting at a boundary when visitors come to the door.
- Waiting at a threshold for permission to cross.
- Waiting at an open car door for permission to exit.
- Practicing cueing your dog when you are a distance
away from him.
- MAKE IT A GAME!
- Practice having a friend knock at your door while
you cue your dog to "line-up". Once your dog sits,
click and release him to greet the visitor. Gradually
increase the time the dog stays in the sit position before you click.
